I know I have posted bits and pieces on residency in El Salvador but I have gotten a few emails on the subject so here is a quick and updated post about the legality of living here.
If you are an American Citizen there are several options for getting residency and work permission in El Salvador.
First and foremost when you enter you will purchase a tourist card which is good for 90 days. This allows you to visit El Salvador and the other C4-A countries for 90 days. You can ask for a one time extension of this card without leaving El Salvador. In addition if you just leave to another neighboring country for 72 hours and come back you get a new tourist card. You can do this as many times as you want and if you don't mind taking a weekend outside of El Salvador every 3 months you could probably live like this for years. It's really no hassle and very cheap to drive or bus to another country.
If you want to get residency you have three options.
1. Rentista - This option eliminates your ability to work in El Salvador. It basically gets you residency and after 5 years citizenship but you must provide simple documentation you have proof of income. This could be social security check from the US, a work at home job or your own business. It requires little more than a bank statement showing a few months of activity of proof. It takes a few months to get the paperwork. You can get a license in El Salvador, perform just about any task and live comfortable as a Rentista. You will not be able to work in this country.
2. Permiso de Trabajo - This is also an option. It is simply a residency option that allows you to work during the time you have it. First 2 years it has to renewed every year and after that every 3 years, you can ask for citizenship after 5 total years. The process is quite easy but best left to a lawyer, the Gold Firm in San Salvador can take care of the entire process for about 300 dollars. It takes a few months and you can be granted Constancia to live in El Salvador while the paperwork is being taken care of. You will need a local police report from your state in the USA, in VA this was done via form on the website and a 15 dollar fee all through the mail. You will also need your birth certificate which will have to be apostilled. This can be done in the state of issue for around 20 dollars.
3. Marriage - If you marry someone from El Salvador with basically no questions asked you will be legal in under a year and have citizenship. Lots of paperwork and a bit of a headache but it works.
Remember, El Salvador isn't strict on Americans visiting. The chances of getting deported are low unless you are a terrorist and commit an insane act. Nobody will bother you here. It is still important to respect immigration laws and ask for legal permission to be present just as any citizen of El Salvador would have to do if they want to visit or live in the United States. The process might not be the easiest but it can be completed as long as you have time and patience, you will get residency. The Gold Firm in San Salvador did a great job and handled mostly everything for me. I hate to spend 300 dollars but it was just easier than deal with all the stress.
I just want to make some updates based on information received from a wonderful reader George.
1. Border Crossing are a hassle. The process is incredibly slow and requires patience. Cars with American Plates often under-go a hassle. Crossing in and out of Costa Rica can be especially slow. Many countries are very unaware of the rules regarding C4-A. A boarder crossing guard has refused a reader entry for attempting to enter "El Salvador" more than three times in one year. This could seriously dampen the leave every three months plan.
2. C4-A countries and tourist cards. Leaving a C4-A country and going to another will not get you a new tourist card. You have to leave the C4-A countries completely. The following are C4-A Countries, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.
3. Problems for Salvadorenos? This is not the first report of problems for Salvadorenos "returning home" traveling through C4-A borders. It seems they constantly suspect they are up to "no good" if they are back in the region. This can present an inconvenience for El Salvador nationals who have spent time away.

I can only recall a few ocassions when El Salvador has been strict with visitors, this has happened when a visitors get involved in local political parties (politics in general), it has happened before and has been published in newspapers.
That's my tip for anyone visiting El Salvador ^^
Rodrigo, excellent addition! I appreciate that! Great tip.
My wife (from El Salvador) says, she has only ever seen trouble one time here, and a gentleman from England was protesting a law with some locals.
So essentially the only way to make problems with immigration here is to stick your nose in political issues.
Stray clear of that and no problem. I have no affiliation to anything political here, nor back in the states. So I haven't experience any issues.
Anyone else here, remember, your a guest, politics are for the locals.
Thanks Rodrigo!
Do you have to provide proof of support? Is that ever an issue?
My understanding is that there is one employee in the American Embassy in San Salvador who works with Americans "in trouble" or with problems of some kind. It must be a nightmare trying to help people who have done something wrong and want the Embassy to fix things for them. In any case, the service is there, per my understanding.
George,
I have a similar understanding. They have a case worker but apparently most crimes here are outside there ability to help.
I would imagine with immigration issues they could probably help though.
im elsalvadorean but was born in the us n i would like to go ther n visit places
