I just found this blog and I feel compelled to add some thoughts, things I wish some one had told me before coming to ES. If you are planning to live here make sure you get recent copies of your birth certificate as well as a recent criminal history spanning 5 years. Have these documents apostilled, but don't bother with a translation, that must be done by a special lawyer here in ES. Make sure your birth certificate matches the name on your passport, so if you are married your passport still has to be in your maiden name. If bringing your children make sure the Salvordorian parents name is on the birth certificate. This will make it easy to obtain residency for the child. Also bring all of your immunization records for the children.
All personal hygiene products are very expensive here so you will want to bring some stock, especially body washes, shampoos and razors.
If you recieve checks from the US ie pension or social security they will take at least 3 weeks to clear in a bank here. It is best to set up direct deposit, luckily CitiBank is prevelant in ES. If you do plan on recieving correspondence from the US it is best to rent a post office box. Mail service in some areas is simply non existent.
Ease yourself slowly into the local cuisine. The water that is pumped into homes is very heavily chlorinated and will reak havoc on your stomach if you are not careful. Bottled water is your best bet. The chlorine will also dry your skin so bring lotion.
It does take some time, but you do get used to life here, just be patient and have a sense of humor.
