It took us about an hour leaving from San Salvador (Actually, La Libertad, about 10 mins outside of Santa Tecla). I just wanted to share my experience and photos. This is not necessarily a travel blog, but occasionally I feel it can help to share special places and stores about El Salvador. Especially for those planning on living here.
My overall impressions are good. The town has an authentic, classic feel. People are incredibly polite (I mean it, even more so than the rest of El Salvador). The "lago" (lake) is beautiful, although it is man made. It is large. The overall beautiful thing about Suchitoto is the security. They tolerate 0 violence. It is one place in El Salvador where you have no risk. We walked the streets day and night, with cameras, on side roads, alone and nothing happened. In fact people looked out for us. It is a great place. Some basic merchandise is a little more expensive but it's mostly because of the tourism. There are very cheap accomodations.
We found a hostal/club/bar/restaurant with a beautiful lake view for about $7-10 bucks a night. It was clean and nice. Pictures are below. The business is for sale too, so if anyone is interested. The beer is cheap too, a bucket of 6 cold Pilsener costs $5.00 which means they are about $0.75 each. The owner is incredibly friendly, gave us a tour of the rooms and let us on the upper deck for the lake view at no cost.
Here are my pictures. I took these all. Feel free to make request for pictures of towns and areas. I travel around the country alot and will glady take pictures of certain areas on request.
(The Journey Begins)
(Along the road, entering Suchitoto)
(The gas station entering the town, one of the only, so fill up here, old style pumps! Full service - polite)
(Welcome!)
(The first park and church entering town, this is not the town square)
(Streets going into the upper town area)
(Town Square, Church, Park)
(Town Market, it's very Small, just souvenirs mostly)
(On the left, green sign, thats the place I mentioned, cheap rooms, very nice)
(Church)
(Fountain in park center, in front of church - good for pictures!)
(The nice hotel/restaurant/club I mentioned, again wonderful service, it's for sale too)
(Same business as above, view of lake looking off roof terrace)
(Entrance to another nice restaurant down the road)
(Inner city street. Clean, quiet, safe and peaceful)
(View of the lake, from the "Lake view" restaurant. Decent food - a bit pricey, good service, spectacular views)
(Lake view from the Turicentro found at the lake)
